I'm sorry to hear Windmill Lane has closed. Long before I made pop promos there, one of the first big commissions I ever had was to shoot portraits for a Windmill Lane brochure. I was still assisting Tony Higgins, so after a day with him I'd go down to shoot all night in Windmill, which at that time worked around the clock. I met some really great people there who I'd go on to work with for many years.
I posted a couple of the pictures yesterday and someone commented, simply saying “the glamour”.
In hindsight, that’s exactly what Windmill had, in a grey and beaten-down 1980’s Dublin - along with being a thriving creative hub it had glamour, in spades. An unusual quality for a post-production house, perhaps, but that’s one of the things that made it such a great place to work.
